SEO & GEO

Get found — on Google and inside AI answers.

Search optimisation for the way people actually search today: keywords and rankings, plus being named when ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews answer a question in your field.

The shift

Ten results become three names.

In a list of search results you compete with nine other entries and can still be found in position four. In a generated answer, two to four providers are named and the rest are not mentioned at all. That is the actual change, and it rewards clarity over volume.

What I actually do

Structure

One page per service instead of one page for everything. Unambiguous pages are the single biggest lever for both search engines and language models.

Content that can be quoted

Concrete, verifiable statements instead of marketing language. „Individual solutions“ cannot be quoted; a named service with a named scope can.

Structured data

Organisation, services, opening hours and FAQs marked up so machines read facts instead of guessing from prose.

Consistency across sources

Name, address and service wording aligned across your site, Google Business Profile and directories — inconsistency reduces a system’s confidence in every single one.

Technical foundation

Speed, indexability, clean headings, internal linking. Unglamorous, and the reason everything else works.

Honest measurement

Search Console, AI-Overview traffic and documented spot checks in the assistants themselves — no invented GEO score.

A real example

For an electrical contractor the site was split by service, each page aimed at one concrete question, FAQ sections were built from questions the company is actually asked on the phone, and everything was marked up with structured data. Company name, address and service wording were aligned across every external profile.

The result shows up beyond Google: asked the right question, AI assistants now recommend the company by name. None of it was a trick — it was thorough work carried through to the end. See the project →

    Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No, but the foundation is identical. SEO aims at a position in a list of results; GEO aims at being named inside a generated answer. Around eighty per cent of the work overlaps — clean structure, unambiguous content, structured data. The rest is GEO-specific: quotability and consistency of your information across sources.

    Can GEO be measured?

Not as precisely as SEO, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling something. There is no search console for ChatGPT. What you can do: ask the systems your customers‘ typical questions on a regular basis and document whether and how you appear, plus watch AI-Overview traffic in Google Search Console and referral traffic from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

That cannot be scheduled honestly. These systems draw partly on live search results and partly on training data with a significant lag. Changes that work through live retrieval can show within weeks; anything that depends on training data takes far longer.

Do I need a new website for this?

Usually not. If the technical basis is sound and the site is indexable, GEO can be done on what you already have. A rebuild only becomes necessary when the content is so unclear that no unambiguous statements can be extracted from it.
